Why we love Cedar Manor Hotel for a weekend

Not only does this beautiful 150-year-old country house hotel come with an enviable location near the shores of Lake Windermere, plus a suite of 10 gorgeous rooms to stay in, it also gives one of the warmest Cumbrian welcomes in the area. Bespoke and personal, this is the boutique hotel to weekend in when you want to feel more like a friend than a guest.

Cedar Manor boutique hotel in Windermere hasn’t forgotten the most important rule of hospitality: ‘always give the the best of yourself to your guests’. You only have to glance at the online reviews to see that going beyond expectations is quite normal at this hotel: “Nothing was too much trouble“, “From the moment you walk in, you feel at home”“Wow, just wow”.

It seems that no matter how many awards Cedar Manor racks up or how many star reviews it gets, the hotel keeps its feet on the ground and its service genuine and personal. What this translates to is attentive, hands-on help from the small professional team and the hotel’s lovely owners, Jonathan and Caroline Kaye – without being over-familiar or intrusive.

There are maps and wellies to borrow, should you need them. You’ll also get the inside skinny on the best things to do in Windermere and the Lake District, from a local’s perspective. Jonathan and Caroline know the best walks, restaurants, attractions, and driving routes to make your Windermere weekend really something.

The Location

You’ll find Cedar Manor Hotel on the outskirts of Windermere surrounded by immaculate, award-winning gardens. Although there are no lakeside views from the hotel, the shores of Lake Windermere are just a short, effortless stroll away.

What’s more, the hotel’s location does mean you’re far enough away from the Windermere tourist bustle to offer you a peaceful staycation during the peak summer months. Stay here and you’re within striking distance of the Lake District’s finest attractions, including Beatrix Potter’s farm, Hilltop Farm and Dove Cottage, William Wordsworth home. Not to mention the rest of the lakes and the lovely towns of Ambelside, Grasmere and Coniston.

This boutique Windermere hotel started life as a Victorian country house, built in 1854 – and a striking one at that. It’s a substantial slate Victorian house, in a fashionable neo-Gothic style with decorative gables and windows. It was later turned into a B&B, and then a hotel, in the 1960s.

Jonathan and Caroline fell in love with the property 15 years ago, sweeping it up and giving it some serious CPR. Bold colours, modern furniture, expensive creature comforts, all co-exist happily with the hotel’s original character and country-house vibe making it feel homely and grand at the same time.

The Rooms & Facilities

There are 10 rooms (two on the ground floor), each one sleeping 2 adults and styled individually using skilled local craftsman. The Coach House Suite is more of a self-contained pad than a room, giving you the full Windermere boutique hotel experience, but with the added space, privacy and flexibility that comes with your own open-plan living and dining area.

The patterned feature walls in each room jump out at you and every piece of locally hand-made furniture has its own story to tell. The owners have carefully thought through all the details, including the custom-made hospitality trays.

Langdale Bedroom

Standing proudly in some of the bedrooms are four-poster beds, which are fit for a queen. King-sized beds are also available and the ensuites that accompany these are kitted with sharply modern spa baths. All of rooms feature flat screen TVs, tea and coffee making facilities with fresh milk, hairdryers, free wi-fi, dressing gowns and REN toiletries.

Alongside the five-star rooms, there are two comfortable sitting rooms, plus a paved terrace with plenty of space for guests to relax. The lovely gardens and mature shrubbery are worth exploring and you have to try the homemade Afternoon Tea – one of the best in the area.

Cedar Manor also serve a delicious and hearty Cumbrian breakfast that’ll start your day off ‘reet’, as well as a simply supper service for residents. As with the rest of the hotel, the food and service is on-point – and will leave you with the smug feeling that you’ve made excatly the right choice.
