For a place just for two (and your furry pal), you really are spoilt at The Roost. This huge converted barn in Oswaldkirk has more space to sashay around in than some family homes. The giant, beamed open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen room could easily house a small family – and you get it, blissfully, all to yourselves.
At one end, there’s a mighty panoramic window looking out onto 1/2 acre of shared enclosed garden (where you’ll find a sheltered campfire for marshmallow-toasting and sundowners). At the other, there’s a king-sized bedroom, with thick carpets, plush furnishings and complimentary robes and slippers; along with a big modern bathroom with tiled walk-in rainfall shower and underfloor heating.
There’s also a large muddy shoes utility room, filled with practical bits (hoover, full-length freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer) as well as thoughtful dog-friendly touches left by the dog-loving owners: holiday doggy tags, dog towels, water and food bowls, dog biscuits, fleece throws for the sofa, spare leads and poo bags. It’s clear your hosts, Lisa and Jason, care that you don’t go without – and, on our visit, they even arranged a stargazing pod for us outside in the garden filled with blankets, books and telescope. Yes, this rugged patch of North Yorkshire is a stargazers’ paradise, boasting some of the clearest skies in the UK.

Great for gathering together (paws and all), The Stables is a wonderful rural base for your weekend or midweek stay near Helmsley. It has the space you need – tick. Comes with walks galore on the doorstep – tick. And boasts a separate games room for bored children or adults to stay smiling – tick.
Light floods into the tiled living area in The Stables thanks to the double floor-to-ceiling French doors, giving you a lovely view of (and easy access to) the enclosed rear garden 24/7. The open-plan inside is made for groups. There are three springy sofas set around a coffee table and there’s a 32” flat screen TV, DVDs and Freeview to keep you all entertained.
So after a day out exploring North Yorkshire, you can chill out in front of the log burner (which is ready to light when you arrive) with your feet up. Alternatively, play games around the six-seat dining table (dressed with fresh flowers, fruit and a welcome hamper) or assemble for a home-cooked feast and chit-chat.
