Sat next to the sparkling River Lugg in Herefordshire, the Riverside at Aymestrey has cracked the code when it comes to superb food, exceptional service and a warm Herefordshire welcome. Get us back there, right away.
Once upon a time it was mainly sheep drovers stopping at this pretty 16th-century pub in Herefordshire, keen to whet their whistle before the journey home. Today, The Riverside at Aymestrey still has a heart big enough for locals and those passing through, offering a place to sleep and eat within its Elizabethan timber frames that’s hard to forget.
Winner of Visit England ‘Best Tourism Pub 2018’, The Riverside is situated deep in the heart of Herefordshire countryside just on the southern edge of the Mortimer Forest, yet close enough to Ludlow and Hereford to be a handy base when visiting.
Find it next to the 1931 bridge over the River Lugg, surrounded by lush countryside. When the sun shines, picking a table in the terrace garden by the river and listen to the birdsong. When it’s chilly, head indoors to the hearty bar with its red brick, hop-dressed timber beams, crackling wood-burning stoves and sofas. Here you can relax with a morning coffee or pre-dinner real ale, local cider or gin.
The Food and Drink
Expect exceptional food, with impeccable service. The fare is uber-fresh, with local Herefordshire ingredients that are ethically and sustainably sourced; many coming from the kitchen garden or made fresh on site, including the garden honey, oat and yogurt soda bread, and lemon verbena ice cream.
Not only is the menu seasonal and fresh, its also delightfully original. From the battered Herefordshire snails with truffle mayo and parsley to the salt-baked celeriac with hazelnut gremolata, spinach and locally-source goats’ cheese, there’s something eye-widening and delicious to choose from.
What’s more, the prices are surprisingly affordable (mains start from £13.50) and the waiting staff are helpful, polite and attentive to a fault. Without doubt, it’s some of the best service we’ve had to date.
bar area offers two double-sided wood-burning stoves with sofas and soft seating to relax in for a morning coffee or pre-dinner drink.interesting wine list, we offer hand-pulled real ales from Cleobury Mortimer and Stoke Lacey and cider from Tenbury Wells and Leominster.
