Sleeps 2 | Dog-Friendly | Characterful Hideaway | Near Rye | From £125pn
Life’s too short for ordinary. And The Workshop in East Sussex is living proof of that. Look inside this stunning Rye self-catering hideaway and you’ll instantly be swept away in a swirl of colour, texture and pattern. Romance radiates from every beam. Magic emanates from every brick. Yes, Toto – we’re definitely not in Kansas anymore.
Of course, there are other self-catering properties in Rye that would also make a great short break destination. But, if any come close to the level of quirky charm that The Workshop offers you, we’ll eat our ruby slippers.
This enchanting place, which sleeps two adults (and welcomes dogs), is an emporium of delight. It’s been meticulously furnished by the owner, Tara, whose artistic talents also lie behind a popular and beautiful boutique shop in Tenterden, Rising Star.
With her distinctive creative flair, Tara’s renovated a modest rural industrial outbuilding, which once repaired old cartwheels, and transformed it into a romantic 1-bedroom getaway that will root itself deep into your memories.
The Workshop, as Muggles call it, sits in the curtilage of a beautiful grade-2 listed Tudor property. Outside, there’s a large sunny garden, dotted with giant oaks and swimming in bird-song, and a private BBQ area where you can cook up something tasty. The ample space gives you a designated bay for your own car, as well as parking space for guests (should you want them to find you).
Nearby two of the area’s most popular destinations await: Rye and Camber Sands are a hop and a skip away, along with a well-loved local favourite, Jempsons’ family supermarket. Yet this Rye self-catering dreamboat is free of any tourist hustle and bustle because it’s tucked apart from the real world on a quiet country lane. There’s even a hidden track which’ll usher you secretly to and from the two outstanding local pubs.
Head inside to The Workshop’s eclectic interior and drink it all in. Modern necessities dance a saucy rumba with handpicked antiques in every room. From the open-plan living, dining and kitchen space (with its wrought-iron chandeliers and wondrous objet d’art) to the bedroom squirrelled away in the eaves (with a bed that would be at home in Versailles).
Pop your head in the star-printed bathroom and you won’t be disappointed here either: there’s a mighty cooper bathtub waiting at one end made for all kinds of kings, queens, wizards, warlocks – and muggles. As well as a soaking-big shower.
