Fabulous Tours | Corking Tastings | Vineyard in Wales
Red, white or rose? No matter which tipple you prefer, a visit to the White Castle Vineyard in the village of Llanvetherine Wales, is sure to leave you on cloud wine.
On a sunny day, this family-run vineyard in the heart of the Monmouthshire countryside, could easily be mistaken for a rustic vineyard in the glorious Italian hills. With its entrance marked by a grade II listed 16th century barn, the vineyard is set on a gentle south-facing slope for optimum sunlight.
Specialising in red, white, rose, sparkling and fortified wine, the vineyard’s offerings have picked up awards from left, right and centre. Much to the delight of its owners, Robb and Nicola Merchant, who weren’t planning to start a vineyard when they bought the land in 1995.
It wasn’t until 2008 that their Welsh vineyard started to spring to life. After purchasing an additional 5 acres, performing all the necessary soil tests and planting around 4,000 vines, the partners in wine opened their vineyard to the public – and haven’t looked back. Now, this vineyard in Wales welcomes you with open arms for tours and wine tastings galore. Vive le vin!
Weekend vineyard tours and wine tastings
On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, you can swing by this charming vineyard in Wales for a 90-minute tour, led by either Robb or Nicola (see our full review here). You’ll hear more about their experiences of turning their vineyard dream into a reality, their passion for all things wine, and their extraordinary studies in viticulture (that’s winegrowing to you and me).
Afterwards, you’ll be taken for a wine tasting session to sip on 4 of the vineyard’s award-winning red, white and rose wines. There is an accompanying Welsh cheese platter, which is optional but very much encouraged.
Shop for wine at the Cellar Door
Take a slice of Welsh vineyard home with you: from Friday to Sunday the vineyard’s Cellar Door is open for delicious wine and gift purchases. During the winter months, you can even make an afternoon of it by booking a lunch platter in advance to enjoy on-site.
If you live further away but want to revel in quality Welsh wine from White Castle Vineyard, you can get free delivery on website orders over £90. There’s also a 5% discount on website orders over £180 – just enter voucher code Firebreak2020 when you check out.
Adopt a Welsh vine? We’ll drink to that
What do you get the person who has everything? How about their very own vine on a vineyard in Wales? For the princely sum of £46.50 (plus P&P), White Castle Vineyard lets you adopt a vine from one of their 5 grape varieties. For the next 12 months you can soak up all the joys of having your own vine – without having to actually take care of it. And, if you’re so inclined, you can even head down to the vineyard at harvest time to help pick the grapes from your adopted vine.
Yes siree, trust us: a trip to White Castle Vineyard will leave you with a taste for the viner things in life.
