Unique eco-friendly campsite | 5 Hobbit Houses | 3 Eco Pods
When you want wildflowers at your feet, rolling skies over your head, and twinkling fairylights sparkling in your nights, head to The Hideaway at Baxby Manor near York. This peaceful and remote off-grid campsite comes with a Middle Earth-style charm that would make Tolkien feel at home.
The magic of The Hideaway at Baxby Manor (to give the campsite its official name) is its exquisite simplicity. You come here, not to party, but to escape the throb of the real world and to rediscover the joy in simple things: toasting marshmallows over a campfire, chatting under the stars late into the night, watching your children play happily in the open air – free of phones and games consoles – whilst the wind tugs at their hair.
The campsite
The six-acre meadow of The Hideaway sits in the grounds of 700-year-old Baxby Manor – which has served as a family home for six generations – and is found on the edge of the quaint North Yorkshire village of Husthwaite. The site lives appropriately up to its name, hidden down a single track lane and tucked away from hustle and bustle.
Once you’re here, you can either pitch up your tent or campervan or, alternatively, hunker away by the stream in one of the site’s five magical Hobbit Houses or three unique hexagonal Eco Pods.
These quirky wooden chalets give you the thrill of camping, with a little extra comfort thrown in. They are all off-grid, so you cook on barbecues, camp-stoves or over the private fire pit. Your light comes from fairylights and solar lanterns instead of electricity. And all have double beds and mattresses for a super cosy and warm night’s sleep under your own bedding, which you’ll need to bring from home.
The Hobbit Houses | Sleep up to 4
Baxby Manor’s very own Hobbiton is a camping experience near York that’s unique and memorable. Beyond the turfed roof, round windows and circular door you’ll discover a proper double bed, one single bed and a single bunk bed over the double – sleeping up to 4.
There’s also your very own wood-burning stove, curtains for privacy, fairylights, and a table and chairs. Outside, there’s up-cycled outdoor furniture and a fire pit. All you need to bring is your bedding and cooking utensils. The communal shower and toilet facilities are just a short walk away.
The Eco Pods | Sleep 2 – 4
For couples wanting something a little different for their York camping, Baxby Manor’s Eco Pods are cute and romantic. The double Eco Pods (of which there are two) come with a comfortable double bed. Curtains keeps things between the two of you and fairylights add a little extra magic to your couple staycation.
For families camping in York, there is a family-sized Eco Pod that sleeps up to 2 adults and 2 children on a double bed and single bunk beds.
The Facilities
In the centre of the camp site, opposite a flourishing orchard, is the main reception building and award-winning facilities. We’re talking hot showers, sinks and loos, a drying room, a small on-site shop (selling free range eggs from the farm, local cider and apple juice, and even a selection of toys for the kids) – all housed within a modern, heated block.
As if that wasn’t enough, on some days of the year, a quirky coffee shack pops up serving delicious home-baked goods, barista coffee and, on most Fridays, authentic stone-baked pizzas. On Saturday mornings the local butcher visits, bringing with him bangers and bacon bbq packs – so you’re never going to run short of food options.
