In a beautiful, peaceful meadow in Devon – right on the banks of the River Exe – you’ll find 4 safari tents gazing out towards the valley beyond: Foxes Earth, Badger Sett, Heronry and Otter Holt. Their canvas walls stirring softly in the Devon breeze. This is Exe Valley Glamping: a natural Devon glamping playground, set on a 150-acre family farm near Bickleigh, and created especially for those who want to switch off, spend time with their family and leave the stresses of life behind.
“Connect with nature, camp in comfort”, are the words that greet you on the five-bar gate as you drive across acres of farmland to reach this secure Devon glampsite car park. Each safari tent is found by following a woodland path shaded by trees and studded with bird song; it’s a 2-minute stroll to your canvas home for the weekend but don’t worry, you won’t have to haul your luggage unaided. Roger, your host and owner, will drive to meet you and load your bags into his quad and trailer, so you can enjoy the walk through the woods unencumbered.
Once you arrive in the glamping meadow the stillness is palpable; thanks to the safari tents’ secluded and rural location, folded away into the countryside between Dartmoor and Exmoor. And once you step inside your canvas accommodation for the weekend you won’t be disappointed.
Thoughtfully-built and carefully designed to have no negative impact on their surroundings, each Devon safari tent at Exe Valley Glamping is furnished to make sure you feel at home whilst enjoying the outdoors.
Inside them all, you’ll find three comfortable and warm bedrooms – one king and one twin, freshly-made with soft linen, plump pillows, thick duvets, and hot water bottles. And each with their own access to the shower and toilet. There is also a whimsical cabin bed with hatch doors and a canopy, perfect for a children’s snuggle den.
The open-plan living and dining space in every safari tent has a rustic Devon farmhouse theme: thick wooden furnishings, soft leather sofas, and natural fabrics await you. The wood-burning stove kicks out enough heat to keep you all snug and cosy, whilst the kitchen area has everything you need to feast inside, including a log-burning oven, gas hob and small fridge.
Beyond the canvas doors of each of these Devon safari tents, is a large deck, complete with a fire pit (the wood is free of charge from the owners’ woods) and views that roll on down to the horizon. If the Devonshire beauty gets too much for your aching eyes, you can always lie down in the hammocks or take a stroll through the woods to the village of Bickleigh.
This friendly, small Devonshire village offers a warm welcome alongside its tearoom and craft shops. You’ll also find a clutch of lovely pubs should you want to forgo the cooking, including The Beer Engine, The Cadeleigh Arms, and the Fishermen’s Cot.
Should you want to venture further afield, the market town of Tiverton is just three miles away. And don’t forget, the beautiful River Exe is a stone’s through from your front door, so should you fancy a wild swim or a chilled out paddle, you can.
