With roots dating back more than 900 years, The Green Dragon Hotel in Hereford is one of the oldest hotels in Britain. Traditional, historic and casting a striking presence in the centre of Hereford, this is a hotel with royal pedigree and a whole lot more besides.
King Edward IV, Admiral Nelson and the composer Sir Edward Elgar are just some of the guests who’ve stayed under the protective watch of the Green Dragon Hotel in Hereford since its inception back in the Middle Ages. Back then, it was known as the White Lyon and was a popular hostelry for pilgrims visiting the shrines of St Ethelbert and St Thomas Canteloupe in Hereford Cathedral.
As Herefordshire grew in importance, so did the Green Dragon becoming a grand coaching inn, surviving the Civil War and WWI and WW2. A long period of underinvestment and neglect followed during the late 1950s and 60s until the hotel was saved in mid-2018 by a collective of Herefordshire investors, keen to restore it to its former glory.
Today, the newly-refurbished Green Dragon has all the architectural splendour that welcomed the likes of Elgar yet with a contemporary, colourful 20th-century twist. The hotel’s private and public spaces are huge, airy and weighty with historical features: oil paintings dot bright walls, oak-panels sit alongside plush velvet sofas and chairs, and heritage prints hang for the curious to examine.
There’s a ballroom, two elegant city-sleek bars (The Offa Bar and The Orange Bar), a stylish large lounge (The Garrick Lounge) and a brasserie restaurant (The Hereford), serving a mix of classic and modern dishes in the classic 1920’s panelled dining room, which is where you also have breakfast.
The rooms are equally handsome and historic; there are 83 on offer ranging from classic singles and luxury doubles to ‘apartments’ – rooms that sleep 2 adults and 2 children, with a super king size double or twin beds, sofa bed, small kitchenette and en-suite bathroom.
Be careful you don’t get lost, the hotel is cavernous and the corridors are long, creaky and dark, adding to the unique atmosphere. If you get a chance, check out the 15th-century firreplace in the oak-panelled Judges’ Room – we asked at reception and the staff were only too happy to help us out.
