Why we love The Hideaway for a weekend
“Talk about friends with benefits. Stay for a hot tub break at The Hideaway in County Durham and take advantage of the fabulous facilities of its super-luxe next door neighbour: Headlam Hall Hotel. We’re talking a swish spa and fitness suite, tennis courts, a golf course and two fancy-pants restaurants. Over indulgence is encouraged.”
In the centre of the hamlet of Headlam, County Durham, you’ll find Headlam Hall Hotel. And tucked discreetly into the hotel’s sweeping grounds is The Hideaway: a slick, contemporary ‘mini’ cottage for 2 where you can laugh, laze and lie about in the hot tub, before living it up as lady of the manor just next door.
The Hideaway is a modern self-catering addition to the traditional grandeur of Headlam Hall, set just 30 metres away. Airy and uncluttered, it’s an open-plan space of bright colours, geometric soft furnishings and quirky design touches – ideal for couples’ hot tub breaks and a great base for exploring Co. Durham and wonderful Northumberland for a weekend.
There’s a large, on-trend living room (with a 60-inch TV with Sonos surround sound system), a petit dining room and an ice-white neon-lit kitchen, with everything you both need to hole up for a romantic weekend and not see another person!
On the ground floor, you’ll also find your elegant bedroom with a super-king double bed to not get out of all Saturday if you fancy it (this is a judgement free zone). And enough space for you, your partner and the dog to get along nicely, without tripping over each other.
Upstairs, roosting in the glass-fronted mezzanine, is a great chill-out space which is flooded with light from the two Velux windows.
You’ll also find a high-end bathroom with a walk-in shower, thick towels and Molton Brown toiletries. There’s no bath, but there is the private outdoor hot tub on the patio with lovely countryside views, so you won’t feel short changed.
Best of all, if you like your hot tub breaks with a kick of countryside luxury, make the short walk over to Headlam Hall just next door. This creeper-covered hall, dating from Jacobean times, knows exactly how to make you feel like a lord and lady for the weekend. But don’t worry about any of it feeling a bit pompous. Everything here is done with a personal touch thanks to the hotel’s down-to-earth owners and super-helpful team.
Take a turn around the beautiful walled gardens, order afternoon tea on the terrace, laze with a newspaper in the drawing room or book in for a superb meal in the contemporary-style Orangery. If you want a spa treatment, a round of golf, to borrow a bicycle (free of charge) or even to drive a classic car, the unstuffy hotel staff are happy to sort it out for you. You can then head back to The Hideaway to cwtch up to sleep – and get ready to over indulge again the next day.
