4 nights from £211 | Near pubs | Sleeps 2 | Overlooking estuary
Sleep like Rapunzel in Peter’s Tower, a late 18th-century memorial building that deliberately echos of Venice’s St Mark’s Campanile. Built by William Peters in memory of his wife, Mary Jane, the tower has incredible views over the broad estuary of the Exe.
You’ll find Peter’s Tower in the bijou village of Lympstone in Devon, its spire peeking above the rooftops of fishermen’s cottages. A few steps from its front door are 3 pubs and a train station.
Inside the tower, a wrought iron staircase spirals upwards, and leading off it are a series of small rooms: a bathroom, kitchen/diner, lounge and bedroom. Perfect for 2. Every inch of space inside its tiny rooms has been crafted to be cosy and functional, fitted out with teak and brass and varnish – much like the space on a yacht.
The views from all the windows are blissful and you’ll find yourself staring for hours at the birds and boats that call this stretch of the River Exe home.
You can rent Peter’s Tower via The Landmark Trust – the charitable organisation that rescues and restores historical buildings that might otherwise be lost.
