Why we love Crossing Cottage at Helmsley Meadows
“Surrounded by the peaceful countryside of the North York Moors, this heritage stone cottage has had a cosy, contemporary makeover. A secluded location, wood-fired hot tub and top-notch local dining make it the perfect romantic retreat for outdoors-loving couples.”
Crossing Cottage near Helmsley was once the railway crossing guard’s gatehouse, standing in watch over the Gilling to Pickering train line. But a recent revamp has given it a new lease of life as a luxurious holiday cottage. Hosts Karen and Darren have made the most of its original character while adding modern comforts, giving it a home away from home feel.
From the cheerful yellow door to the window seat with a view, if you’re a couple or small group of friends looking for time and space to unwind, this Yorkshire cottage with hot tub is just what you need. There’s a restful, remote feel, with the Helmsley Meadows’ six acres of unspoilt countryside on the doorstep and miles of walking routes stretching out beyond. Your dog is welcome too, with dog accessories and treats supplied for pampering your pooch.
If you can drag yourself away, it’s a 1.5-mile-long stroll along the old railway line into Helmsley. Helmsley was voted the UK’s ‘most exciting food destination’ in the 2024 Good Food Guide Awards, and is packed with delicious places to eat and drink. And just beyond are the spectacular North York Moors, historic sights like Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard, and the dramatic North Yorkshire coastline.
The cottage
Bedrooms – Crossing Cottage’s two bedrooms are both located upstairs, with king-sized beds topped with hotel-quality mattresses you can sink right into. Both rooms are decorated in calming, neutral shades, with country chic fabrics and accessories. And you can choose your favourite view – either out over the meadows or uphill towards the remains of an old Roman settlement.
Bathroom – The bedrooms share a bathroom, which has been cleverly designed to make the most of the space, including a handy wardrobe/dressing area on the landing where you can store clothes and luggage. You can enjoy more fabulous countryside views as you soak in the bath, and there’s also a separate shower.
Fluffy towels and complimentary eco-friendly toiletries are provided, as part of a commitment to sustainability that also includes energy-efficient appliances, recycling and eco cleaning products.
Kitchen – Downstairs the bespoke handmade kitchen features olive green cupboards, wooden worktops and a Belfast sink. It’s fully equipped with high-quality cookware and appliances – an induction hob, electric oven, dishwasher and Nespresso machine included – so you’ve got everything you need to cook up a storm. And a table with corner bench seating makes a cosy dining nook.
Lounge – There’s plenty of space to relax in the light-filled lounge, and a fireplace to add some hygge to any chilly winter nights. You can curl up on the sofa with a book, stream music on the Bluetooth radio and movies on the Smart TV.
Or enjoy the views from the comfy window seat. Once upon a time the crossing keeper sat here to look out for trains. But today you’re more likely to spot local wildlife, like barn owls, house martins, hares and pheasants. There’s a nod to the building’s history in the old wooden shutters too, which were originally used as blackouts during the Second World War.
Just off the lounge is a downstairs boot room with a charging station and space to store your coats, dog beds and leads.
Garden – Step outside into a secluded private country garden, which looks out over the six acres of Helmsley Meadows. There’s a seating area where you can relax with a morning coffee or glass of wine as the sun goes down. And a wood-fired hot tub to help any stresses just melt away.
