Why we love Cromwell’s Hideaway for a weekend

“It’s not hard to see why Oliver Cromwell chose this spot centuries ago. A vast cloak of fields and trees surrounds the hut, keeping it (and you) nicely hidden from view. So you can relinquish your cares to the wind, pour a glass of local Welsh wine and toast the peace, seclusion and the man who would not have approved of any of it.”

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Monmouthshire, just a mile from the charming village of Raglan, sits Cromwell’s Hideaway—a delightful shepherd’s hut perfect for those with hermit-like sensibilities.

Once upon a time, the land around the hut would’ve belonged to nearby Raglan Castle and the adjacent farm used to house the army’s horses. Cromwell himself was said to have resided in the farmhouse, hence the hut’s lofty title. Whatever the truth of the tale, this Welsh shepherd’s hut is definitely a place to hide out whilst the rest of the world carries on.

Inside and Outside

For us, Cromwell’s Hideaway is the perfect definition of a tiny home. Through its wooden double doors there’s a rustic and modern open-plan space, painted daisy-fresh, and fitted with everything you need to stay a long, long while.

Picture it: underfloor heating so you won’t feel cold whatever the weather. A country-style kitchen with gas hob, fridge, kettle, and toaster for easy self-catering. A large leather armchair and small table next to a log burner where you can lose hours in a book. A pin-neat ensuite with a full-sized shower and WC (with complimentary toiletries, fresh towels and robes). A double bed, plump with quality linens for sleeping happily through your alarm. And all of it cleverly packaged into just 18ft of timber; giving you a feeling of space and cosiness at the same time.

Outside, you’ve [x] acres of Welsh greenery to call your own, along with uninterrupted views towards Raglan Castle and the Brecon Beacons. Strike up the fire pit, grab a blanket and the sunset can be yours too. There’s a small bistro set for 2 for breakfasting al fresco (a continental breakfast is included) or dining under the stars – after all, you are staying in an area famed for its dark skies.

Location

Cromwell’s Hideaway is in pole position for exploring this rich corner of Monmouthshire. Within walking distance you have country pubs that serve top-notch food and drinks. Head a little further and you can be canoeing down the River Wye in no time or sipping local wine at a Welsh vineyard.

Raglan village is a must also, as is a trip to the nearby Brecon Beacons with miles of walking to do and outdoor treasures to root out. As for history, well this delightful region has more castles per square mile than anywhere else in the UK, so you won’t go short changed.

White Castle and Raglan Castle are two to put on your list immediately. Best of all, unlike Cromwell, you won’t have to fight to get inside.
