Why we love Downash Wood Treehouses for a weekend

“When you want wrap-around peace and quiet, where you’re lulled asleep by the forest sounds, then head up into the trees of Downash Wood. Set in beautiful East Sussex, on private land, these two treehouses offer rural solitude – just an hour away from London.”

Within 5 acres of deciduous East Sussex woodland, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you’ll find two stunning hand-crafted treehouses waiting for you: Tinkers Treehouse and Oakey Koakey Treehouse.

Tinkers Treehouse | Adults Only | From £195pn

Treehouse in East Sussex Downash Wood

Tinkers Treehouse is your romantic bolthole for two, resting peacefully amongst large Oaks, Aspen and Silver Birch and rooted on sturdy legs over wood chipped ground. It was the first treehouse Stephen and Jane, your hosts, opened in 2017 – and has had a lot of love poured into it. As you follow a woodland path from the car park, it’s impossible not to notice the stillness of the surrounding countryside. And if you pause for a moment, you may spot a deer hidden in the trees.

Climb the stairs to Tinkers Treehouse to the secluded sun deck and soak up the views as you do. Inside, you’ll find an open-plan wooden interior with apartment-like dimensions (6 metres wide, 6 metres long, 4 metres high). To your right, there’s a modern fitted kitchen with everything you need for self-catering happiness, including a dishwasher. On your left, there’s a bouncy sofa next to a log-burner, making up your living space. And just off in a wooden alcove is your downy king-sized bed with goose-feather duvet for uber-luxe lazy Sunday lie-ins.

  • Sleeps 2 adults, not suitable for children
  • Private outdoor area with a BBQ firepit for al fresco feasts
  • Ample logs, kindling, firelighters, newspaper and matches provided free of charge
  • Separate shower room with a huge rainfall shower
  • Large wardrobe with shelving in the bedroom, along with a hair dryer and mirror

Oakey Koakey Treehouse | Children Welcome | From £210pn

Treehouse in East Sussex Downash Wood

Oakey Koakey Treehouse is built for families. A rope-style walkway leads you up to this cantilevered family retreat in true treehouse fashion. As the kids explore the inside, collapse into the chairs on the deck and take a deep breath: a stressless weekend awaits. If you can peel yourself off the deck, step inside to Oakey Koakey’s stylish space. It’s open-plan in part, with a living, dining and bedroom taking up the hexagonal dimensions perfectly so you never feel on top of one another. Best of all, in a separate room there are bunk beds in the style of another mini treehouse for the kids to hideaway in.

  • Sleeps 2 adults, with bunks for 2 children
  • Private outdoor seating area with a BBQ firepit for al fresco feasts
  • Ample logs, kindling, firelighters, newspaper and matches provided free of charge
  • Separate shower room with a huge rainfall shower
  • Large wardrobe with shelving in the bedroom, along with a hair dryer and mirror

You’ll also find underfloor heating in both and all the utilities connected to the mains. The views from each are equally eye-widening: the floor-to-ceiling windows overlook your own private woodland where deer and badgers are often spotted.

Seclude and Private Location

Tinkers and Oakey Koakey Treehouses are found at Downash which is tucked between the royal town of Tunbridge Wells and the seaside towns of Hastings, Rye and Camber Sands – the area is known as 1066 Country – and there is fantastic sightseeing and adventure around every corner. Tunbridge Wells is known for the Pantiles, a Georgian colonnade architectural gem, as well as its jazz nights, diverse boutique shops and mix of cafes, restaurants and bars. Whilst Hastings is fun for all the family with amusement arcades, pebble beaches, local seafood stalls and restaurants in the old town.

Nearby Attractions

What’s more, both Downash Wood Treehouses are next door to Bewl Water Reservoir, which is the largest reservoir in the south of England. It covers over 800 acres with a 12.5 mile reservoir route that’s ideal for walking and cycling. Plus, there’s lots of fun on the water with an aqua park, fishing, sailing, surfing, open water swimming, pedalos, canoes and paddle boarding rowing and much much more!

Just down the road from the Downash Wood Treehouses is Bedgebury Pinetum, a 3,000-acre world-leading collection of conifers and an award-winning visitor attraction with cycling, walking, GoApe high rope climbing, horse riding and much more.

Should you be lured from your treetop hideaway, you’ll discover fantastic local country pubs serving up locally-sourced and grown food and drink in relaxed and friendly atmosphere.   The Bell Inn in Ticehurst village won pub of the year in the South of England in 2017 and has gone from strength-to-strength.
