Why we love Big Skies Glamping for a (quiet, mature) Hen Weekend
“Slip wildflowers in your hair, explore barefoot under dusky skies, swap stories around a crackling campfire, then settle with your crew under canvas to talk until the early hours. That’s the beauty of a hen party at Big Skies Glamping. Here, amongst the butterfly-rich ‘wolds’ of Gloucestershire, you can celebrate uniquely and meaningfully (without tacky traditions) – leaving you rooted and ready to start the next exciting chapter of your life.”
Big Skies Glamping in the Cotswolds has the ingredients you need for a grown-up, quiet glamping hen party. This family-run glamping site sits amongst a sea of wildflower meadows, near the Regency town of Cheltenham. It’s a secluded, peaceful and private glamping site – yet easy for your hens to get to from the M5 – and is available to hire exclusively so you won’t have to share your celebrations with any other campers.
The Stays
On site there are five premium boutique bell tents, set 15 metres apart, sleeping up to four hens.
Hawthorn Tent sits in its own private little nook of the site, one for romantic getaways or those just seeking solitude. Little Oak dog-friendly bell, sits in her own little meadow, slightly separated from the other glampers. Old Ash, Wistley Grove and Ravensgate (which is dog friendly) sit in the same meadow, with plenty of space between them for privacy.
Each tent is premium quality, offering exceptional height inside and plenty of wriggle room so hens can bunk together without getting under one another’s feet. Vicki, who owns the site with her husband, has made sure that every tent is elegantly and comfortably furnished with a duvet-laid double bed, cosy cushions, thick blankets, warm rugs, futon sofa beds, fresh flowers and tea light chandeliers. Rustic, yes – and deliciously so.
As hens, you’ll share a communal wash block with hot running showers and eco toilets. Those hens staying in Hawthorne Tent have their own private eco-compost loo. Cooking happens however you wish it to fit with your glamping hen party – themed or not.
Bring your own food (there’s a fridge to keep things cool) and cook it over the open flame around the site’s fire pit; it sits on the edge of the Cotswolds’ Escarpment and from here the views are sensational. You could also indulge in a Big Skies Glamping wood fired pizza evening; easy and affordable.
Head out down the hill and you’ll reach Dunkerton’s Cider with its tap room, shop, pop up street food and party atmos. Plus, the local area is awash with great Cotswolds restaurants so if you want to dress up and go out, there’s plenty of choice nearby. Alternatively, Big Skies Glamping can work with local caterers to create a unique hen feast: from a hog roast BBQ to elegant afternoon tea.
Breakfast comes with a choice of either a ‘Cook Your Own’ hamper with farm-fresh eggs and bacon. Or a ‘Lazy Day Breakfast’ hamper of homemade granola, fruit, yogurt and pastries.
The Experiences
Big Skies Glamping are big believers in your hen party, your way. That’s why, when you hire the whole site, you’re free to put your own creative stamp on your celebration – as long as it’s not loud and raucous. Should you want on-site experiences to indulge in, such as cocktail making or yoga, you can. If you’d like a silent disco for a mini festival vibe, that’s possible too. Big Skies Glamping are willing and able to help you organise a hen party package that works for you, for an additional cost – or you can organise it yourself.
The Location
If your hens are scattered around the UK, Big Skies Glamping is located in a wonderfully central sweet spot in ever-verdant Gloucestershire. Find the site 2 hours from London, 2 hours from Manchester, 1 hour from Bristol and 1 hour from Birmingham. The nearest town – Cheltenham – has a station which is a mere 20 minutes’ drive away. And getting taxis to and from Big Skies Glamping isn’t a problem as it’s well-connected to local taxi firms.
Offsite, the surrounding countryside is awash with pretty Cotswolds villages and towns to visit and there are plenty of walks, too – in fact, Big Skies Glamping sits on the Cotswolds Way – ideal if you’re up for a hike during your hen party glamping celebration.
Of course, stay on site and you won’t be bored: the meadows here are teaming with rare butterflies, the fields ring with the sounds of chaff-chaffs, sparrows and blackbirds, the air is clean and fresh, and the skies – well, as you might expect, the skies are huge. Flick open a book, breathe in the glorious stillness and feel your ruffled feathers ease. High octane hen parties are so over-rated.
“We hired the whole site for a festival themed hen do. The owners were so accommodating with our requests and our hen was blown away with what the place had to offer. The bell tents, the view and the social space were all beautiful. The owners even cooked up pizzas for 23 people on the Saturday night and they checked in with us each morning which was lovely but other than that we were left to it. I would 100% go back even just with my partner and my dog… Its gorgeous. Thanks for a weekend none of us will ever forget!” Stephanie, TripAdvisor
