Why we love the Indigo Hotel Chester for a weekend
“The Indigo Hotel in Chester certainly lives up to its name. Forget beige, templated service, rooms or food, this boutique hotel in Chester’s historic heartland is a kaleidoscope of slick decor, friendly local staff and personality-filled spaces. Best of all, it’s an easy walk from Chester’s famous ‘Rows’. We loved it.”
Hotel Indigo Chester, which opened in June 2019, is a contemporary boutique hotel located in a quiet part of the historic city of Chester. Designed to reflect the city’s famous architecture and the oldest racecourse in the UK, Hotel Indigo Chester is a short walk from Chester’s best bits, including the famous Rows (two-tier medieval galleries of shops), award-winning Storyhouse Theatre, and the 2,000-year-old city walls.
Just as no two neighbourhoods are alike, no two Hotel Indigo properties are alike. Each is designed to uniquely reflect the local culture, character, and history of the surrounding area – and, in our experience, this is not an overstatement.
For us, staying at the Hotel Indigo Chester did not feel like staying at a chain hotel; the service, the rooms, the communal areas, the hotel’s architecture – they all belong firmly in the boutique hotel category. The added sheen, of course, is that you get the conveniences and consistencies you’d expect from one of the world’s largest hotel groups. It really is a best of both world’s experience for not an unreasonable price.
The hotel has 75 guest rooms decorated in 3 beautiful themes each inspired by the history and
locality of historic Chester. We stayed very happily and comfortably in a king deluxe with a private balcony offering rooftop views across the edge of the city. All rooms are equipped with comfy Hypnos beds with luxury Egyptian cotton linen, spa-inspired bathrooms, Nespresso coffee machines, high speed Wi-Fi and a variety of channels on a 40” flat screen TV.
The icing on the cake during our stay was the hotel’s 70-seater adjoining restaurant, The Forge. The food here was so delicious, the ambience so elegant and the waiting staff so attentive that we thought we’d stumbled into an independent eatery, not a restaurant within the hotel.
Opened in 19 May 2021, The Forge has a passion for British food, using only British ingredients, with an emphasis on wild produce and sustainability. The open kitchen cooks over wood and charcoal, using amazing wild and locally reared meat, that is all aged on the premises.
Our Sunday lunch was one of the best we’d had in a long time – and judging by the full tables of happy dinners and the restaurant’s clutch of culinary awards, we are not the only ones to rate this place.
The only downside to the Indigo Hotel in Chester is the parking: there’s no on-site parking given the hotel’s city centre location. However, it’s not hard to find car parks nearby if you do a little research before you set off and you can unload luggage in front of the hotel if you’ve packed for a small army. Plus, park at NCP Pepper Street and you’ll pay just £12.00 for 24 hours instead of £20.00 thanks to the hotel’s affiliation.
Overall, Hotel Indigo Chester really hit our sweet spot and should we be back in Chester in the future, it’ll be the first place we book.
