Why we love Baker’s Loft for a weekend

As central as you can get, right in the heart of all Lyme Regis has to offer (brilliant restaurants, fabulous pubs and great shops). Yet set back from the High Street and as peaceful as can be. This is one Lyme Regis apartment that makes a lovely cosy base for an on- or off-season escape to the Jurassic Coast.

Lyme Regis has no shortage of apartments to hideaway in. But for us, Baker’s Loft self-catering apartment is a sweet retreat for more reasons than one. The smell of freshly-baked bread as you walk towards the apartment is no coincidence; it adjoins one of most delicious bakeries in town so you’re never far away from take-out hot croissants and coffee (as well as a host of other things to do in Lyme Regis).

In fact, baking runs through every brick in Baker’s Loft. This historic apartment is housed within a Grade II-listed Georgian building once home to the Cosy Cafe & Dairy – a popular spot for high-class confectionery, teas and luncheons in the 1900s.

Inside

Baker’s Loft is a self-catering apartment dressed in dreamy soft creams, pinks and browns, with spots of exposed brickwork revealing the original Georgian walls.

The bedrooms: On the first floor, as you open the front door, there are two light and airy bedrooms waiting. The first is the master bedroom slick in cappuccino browns and complete with a supremely comfy king-sized bed, wardrobe, bedside cabinets and chest of drawers.

The second bedroom is dressed in ice-cream pink pastels with a small double bed, two open wardrobe rails and an upcycled chest of drawers. Blinds hang at the windows (keeping the adjacent buildings out of view), thick carpet lines the floor (no need to bring slippers), and each one is deliciously warm and pin-drop quiet (forget the earplugs).

The living space: Climb the up-lit stairs to the second floor where you’ll find a pleasingly compact spread of freshly-renovated rooms. The living and dining space in the apartment is small but perfectly formed, with well-chosen furniture to make lazy morning brunches easy and snug evenings in watching the Smart TV blissful. There’s also an immaculate, spacious bathroom sharing the same landing (be careful to mind your head on the sloping ceiling as you enter), kitted out in spearmint whites and greens with a super-sized walk-in shower.

The kitchen: But full marks go to the gorgeous little kitchen, with retro star-burst brown tiles, and all the luxury bits and bobs to make self-catering effortless (Dorset teas and biscuits, earthenware cups and plates, a Nespresso machine, dishwasher, induction hob and fridge). And, the crowning feature of Baker’s Loft apartment, is an original stone serving hatch that connects kitchen to living room through which you can pass one another flutes of fizzy or steaming cups of tea. Bravo.

The Location

With the sea only a five minute walk away and all the life you could want on your doorstep, this Lyme Regis hideaway delivers on location. Fortunately, it’s set slightly behind the main high street shops on Broad Street, down a private and secure alleyway (not the most attractive part), so you’re away from the road noise or pub kick-out hoopla.

Although Baker’s Loft doesn’t come with a sea view, the views from the lounge aren’t unpleasant. Plus, because of the apartment’s central spot you probably won’t spend too much time inside looking out anyway.
