Why we love Hadspen Glamping Somerset safari tents for a weekend

You won’t hear big cats in the night. Or see wildebeest meander past in the day. But with a natural amphitheatre of rural Somerset beyond your canvas door, you will enjoy an altogether English safari experience at Hadspen Glamping. And return home with a new-found roar.

Hadspen Glamping in Castle Cary Somerset is made for adventurous weekenders who want to feel wild, without sacrificing hotel-style cushy comforts. On this private 5-acre glamping site, you’ll find 3 eco-luxe khaki lodges: Lime Kiln Lodge (sleeping up to 5 and with a hot tub), Grisway Lodge (sleeping up to 7) and Horsecombe Lodge (sleeping up to 4).

The Stay

Each one of these safari tent lodges has been individually decorated by Hadspen’s owner, Lucy. So inside, expect a highly-tailored interior look. Lime Kiln has a cottage core aesthetic. Horsecombe Lodge is bohemian in spirit. And Grisway rocks a contemporary vibe.

The one thing all lodges don’t differ on is the level of luxe furnishings and facilities you’ll find throughout the rooms. Every lodge has an open-plan living room and kitchen boasting Dartington glassware, LK Apothecary diffusers, Charlton & Jenrick log burners (with a mini oven on top), and plush sprawl-worthy sofas. The separate bedrooms come with springy beds topped with Silent Night mattresses and linens, plenty of storage, bedside lamps, and a range of books (for kids and adults).

All of the safari tent-style lodges have bathrooms with basins, flushing loos, and complimentary toiletries from Commune and Faith in Nature. Plus, they all have the coolest modern drench shower experience this side of Manhattan. Yep, this is Somerset safari tent glamping that’s savagely better than average.

What’s more, all safari tents at Hadspen Glamping are off-grid and powered by sunshine. You can’t plug in your laptop or straighteners here, but two usb charging points will juice-up your phone nicely and there are interior lights for when it gets dark. You can forget the unnatural blast of radiators, too.

Instead, during cooler months, you warm up thanks to wood-fired log burners (stocked with responsibly-sourced wood), soft rugs and runners, fluffy hot water bottles, woollen throws and goose-down duvets. Oh, and you’ll find fresh drinkable spring water coming from the taps. Cheers.

The Experience

It would be unusual to spot a lion at Hadspen Glamping; but not a pheasant or a fox or a bird of prey. You’ll definitely hear the soft hoots of owls through the walls of your khaki lodge as you bed in for the night, too. In fact, think of Hadspen Glamping as a safari experience, without the teeth. Here you nuzzle up next to an abundance of Somerset wildlife; where you can watch he birds, bees and butterflies from your veranda.

If you want an adventure off-site, there are walks direct from your front door and you can pre-order bikes to be delivered to site for exploring on two wheels.

Hadspen Glamping is also in a Somerset sweet spot: the ultra-pretty Somerset villages of Castle Cary and Bruton are a short drive away; award-winning country estate The Newt in Somerset is virtually next door; Glastonbury is only 17 miles away and the Glastonbury Festival site of Pilton is just 10 minutes by car (which is why Hadspen Glamping offer Glastonbury glamping packages).

The stunning Dorset Jurassic Coast is easily accessible for a day trip, as is Bath. Alternatively, you can simply bliss out in your safari tent, playing boards games or reading books as you gently feel yourself reroot and rewild.
