Happy New Year from the whole of the Weekend Candy gang! We hope you had the best Christmas and the most spectacular new year. So, 2020 is here: the start of a whole new decade – gulp.

After all the festive food and copious amounts of gin (or was it just us?), perhaps you’d like a bit of rest and relaxation this weekend? If so, we’ve some chillaxed ideas for you to enjoy in the UK this weekend. We’ve even a mega guide to the UK’s Detox Retreats if you fancy getting away for some serious health and fitness.

PS: For more ideas on what to do this weekend, there’s also our Weekend Directory to visit.  And if you do go to any of the events below, swing by the comments below and let us know!

Event | New Year’s Yoga Retreat Day, Bristol City Yoga, Bristol

Sat 4th Jan | Tickets: £60, 10am – 4pm

Start the new year as you mean to go on. Sign up to a day of deeply nourishing yoga practice to get you through the last cold months of winter. Ease your body through asana, meditation, pranayama and yoga nidra, giving yourself the space to move, breathe and rest.

This day long workshop in Bristol is suitable for all levels of yoga experience.  Laura is your guide and will give different options to allow you to practice according to your own energy levels – taking rest if you need to. Lunch is provided – warming, vegan, gluten-free, organic and delicious!

Event | Knitivity, Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucestershire

Sat 4th – Sun 5th Jan | Tickets: Free

Still feeling a tad festive? The ever-popular ‘Knitivity’ is back to the Cathedral and will be on display for visitors to enjoy into the new year. It’s the most creative nativity scene you ever did see!

The entirely knitted life-size Knitivity shares messages of hope and unity and has been created by community groups across Gloucestershire. The collaborative display promotes crafting for wellbeing and provides visitors to the Cathedral with a very special treat during the festive season.

Event | Sunday Night Pub Quiz, Porter’s, Cardiff, Wales

Sun 5th Jan | Tickets: £1 to play

A classic pub quiz on a Sunday night. Love it. Grab 5 of your smartest mates or those friends who have a weirdly obscure knowledge, then head down to Porter’s Pub in Cardiff on Sunday the 5th of Jan to show off your pop culture knowledge.

It is £1 per person to play and you can play in teams of up to 6 people, so choose your team carefully! Arrive early and grab a table: the quiz starts at 7:30pm. Bring a pen and your grey matter.

Event | Wassail at Weston Cider Mill, Ledbury, Herefordshire

Sat 4th Jan | Tickets: Free

Join Weston Cider Mill for their popular annual ‘Wassail’ – an old rural tradition of blessing the apple trees to ensure a good cider harvest in 2020. Meet at their car park from 6.30pm onwards. There will be traditional dancing from 7pm, followed by a torchlight procession into the ancient cider orchards from 7.30pm.

No tickets are required for this event, but all proceeds raised on the night go to St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford, so if you can give a donation please do. You’ll also enjoy warming mulled cider and refreshments to get you ready for the traditional dancing. Plus, there’s also a Wassail Supper in the Scrumpy House Restaurant afterwards.
