‘Tis the season for love and understanding… and lots of presents, pigs in blankets, mulled wine and, of course, a traditional Christmas market. Hundreds of them will be popping up across the UK over the next couple of months so we have been scouring hard to find you the best Christmas markets in the UK to wander around this winter. And we’ve 16 of the best Christmas Markets below for you to check out. 

Truth be told, we’re suckers for the cute chalets, the twinkling lights, the carols playing and the smell of roasted chestnuts in the air. Cue seasonal ‘ho ho ho’, grab your loved ones, embrace the cold and set out for a Christmas adventure. 


The Christmas Market Barn

When: 24th – 25th Nov

Where: Tredegar House, Newport

How much: Adult – £10.10 | Child – £5.05 | Family – £25.25

More than just a Christmas market, at Tredegar House you get to explore the beautiful 17th-century National Trust home, before braving the cold and heading over to their barns filled with seasonal Christmas stalls. But first you will definitely want to wander through the huge, ornate house, feeling very regal indeed.

Sat in 90 acres of beautiful gardens, this red brick house is beautifully decorated for a grand Christmas. We’ve heard that Father Christmas will also be paying Tredegar House a visit too around this festive season, see keep an eye out.

This UK Christmas market is held in Home Farm barns on the Tredegar Estate and sells ornate gifts from local traders and artisan produce. So, you’re sure to find a unique gift.

York St Nicholas Christmas Festival

Where: Parliament Street, York 

When: 14th Nov – 22th Dec

How much: Free entry

The award-winning York Christmas market is a biggie! Peruse produce from crafters and makers showcased at the Made in Yorkshire Yuletide Village. Traditional Christmas pressies can be found amongst the many alpine chalets lining parliament street.

And if you’re hungry, you’re in for a festive feast: York’s Christmas market has an amazing range of delicious winter warming foods. Treats include hot chestnuts and glasses (definitely plural) of warming mulled wine. 

No wonder York’s Christmas Market won Best Large Speciality Market at the Great British Market Awards in 2019. York was also voted the UK’s Most Festive City in 2017. Jingle bells, indeed.

Gloucester’s Vegan Christmas Market

Where: Blackfriars, Gloucester

When: 8th December

How much: £2 entry, under 16s go free

The most wholesome Christmas market you could come across: everything sold in this Christmas market is 100% ethically made and sourced, and vegan-friendly. It’s the perfect place to pick up pressies for your vegan family and friends, as well as enjoy some cruelty-free food and drinks. Santa’s grotto will also be pitched up amongst the stalls, so try and find the jolly fellow!

The market is set in the stunning historic Gloucester Blackfriars, which was founded in 1239 on a site that had once been part of a Norman castle. The rustic ruins are decked out to the max for the Christmas market, so you are sure to feel festive here.

Oxford Christmas Market

Where: Broad street, Oxford city centre

When: 5th – 21st of Dec

How much: Free entry

Oxford will be filled with festive joy as the Oxford Christmas Market returns to the heart of the city on the beautiful and historic Broad Street this December. Wrap up warm and walk amongst the stalls with the sound of choirs singing Christmas carols while market traders offer up unusual wares.

Colourful decorations will be brightening the wooden stalls and the aroma of mulled wine and cinnamon will be wafting round. The Oxford Christmas Market is a truly magical traditional Christmas experience and a ‘must do’ this December.

Chatsworth House Christmas Market

Where: Chatsworth House, Derbyshire

When: 15th Nov – 3rd of Dec

How much: Adult, £25 | Child £14.50

Set in the magnificent Chatsworth House, a huge stately home with an illustrious history, is the starlit Christmas Market. Expect over 100 market stalls selling a huge range of Christmas gifts and decorations.

The best time to visit is at dusk, as it gets chilly and the stars come out. Wrap up warm and wander round the market for the most magical festive feel. You can also explore Chatsworth House’s very own exclusive gifts ranges in the Stables Shop. Here you’ll find homeware, fashion and lots of adorable stocking fillers.

Bath Christmas Market

Where: The streets around Bath Abbey

When: 28th Nov – 15th Dec

How much: Free entry

Along the beautiful Georgian streets of Bath this December will be chalets topped with faux snow selling everything you need this Christmas time. As Christmas markets in the UK go, this one is one of the most magical.

It’s an award-winning market that runs for 18 festive days and champions small local businesses, so it’s a great place to pick up unique gifts this year.

Throughout the market, you’ll also find tasty food to satisfy any appetite; grab a delicious burger, hog roast or caramelised nuts, as well as an aromatic mulled wine to keep you toasty while you browse.

La Fête dé Noué

Where: St Helier, Jersey

When: 22nd Nov – 24th Dec

How much: Free entry

La Fête dé Noué is the name given to St. Helier’s month-long celebration of all things Christmassy.

Picture this: canopies of Christmas lights, stalls heaving with stocking fillers, candle-lit museum tours and children’s lantern parades. This is Christmas in St Helier and it has something for everyone. 

Each festive season the island celebrates its French Norman Heritage, (hence the difficult to pronounce name). They bring the Norman delicacies too for you to enjoy, with saucisson, cider and buttery crêpes dusted with icing sugar. Yep, we’re drooling.

Chester Christmas Market

Where: Town Hall Square, Chester

When: 16th Nov – 22nd Dec

How much: Free entry

Chester Christmas Market is set in the very heart of Chester, getting locals and tourists alike feeling rather jolly.

What awaits you is over 70 traditional wooden chalets surrounding the iconic sparkling tree in the heart of the city centre with the CheSTAR pointing you in the direction of gold, frankincense and myrrh (also known as glühwein, frankfurters and mince pies).

This Christmas market is a handmade, historical and magical experience – one not to be missed if you’re in this neck of the woods.

Hearing Dogs Christmas Market

Where: The Grange, Saunderton, Buckinghamshire

When: 30th Nov – 1st Dec

How much: Adult £6, Students and over 60s £4 Under 16s free

This two-day Christmas Market is the perfect way to get ahead of your Christmas shopping list – and help Hearing Dogs for Deaf People continue their life-changing work. Naturally, the man himself, Mr Santa Clause, will be in attendance to wish all your four-legged friends a tail-wagging Christmas.

Expect great gifts that you can’t find on the high street. Lots of fun kids’ activities (to keep them busy so you can shop in peace). A visit to Santa’s grotto, which is included in your ticket price. A free cup of mulled punch – don’t mind if we do. And lots of well-behaved dogs!

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market

Where: Victoria Square and New Street, Birmingham

When: Nov 7th – Dec 23rd

How much: free entry

Birmingham is buzzing throughout the festive season, but the German Christmas market is a centrepiece in all the festivities. Brought to Birmingham in 1997 by the organiser of the Frankfurt Christmas market, this seasonal extravaganza has Christmas lovers flocking to ‘Brum’.

It is one of the largest authentic German markets outside of Germany, making it one of the most popular markets to visit in the UK.

It has more than 80 stalls offering food, drink, traditional toys, trinkets and a whole host of gifts. Sharpen your elbows, it’s sure to be busy!

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Where: Hyde Park, London

When: 21st Nov – 5th Jan

How much: Free entry

There is so much to see and do at this winter wonderland. From the world’s tallest transportable observation wheel, a magical ice kingdom, and Paddington Bear on Ice, to a programme of comics at the Winter Wonderland comedy club.

Alongside all that there’s also the annual return of the UK’s largest open-air ice rink, après ski-styled ice bar and, to top it all off, jaw-dropping acts in the circus megadome. 

Trust us, you could spend all of December here and still not run out of things to do!

The Advent Festival

Where: Cirencester Centre, Gloucestershire

When: Sat 30th Nov

How much: Free entry

Christmas in Cirencester! The capital of the Cotswolds. It all kicks off with the annual Cirencester Advent Festival and lights switch on. The festival starts at 11am and comes to a climax at 7pm with Christmas lights and a huge fireworks display.

Between then you can enjoy shopping at the arts and craft market – we love New Brewery Arts – eating too many mince pies, then giggling as you take on the fun fair rides. There are also local performers ready to smash it on stage.

It’s a great seasonal day out, which is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Winter Wonderland Nottingham

Where: Old Market Square, Nottingham

When: Nov 15th – Dec 31st

How much: Free entry

This year’s Christmas market in Nottingham is bigger and better than ever – claiming the spot as the largest event in the East Midlands! It has been expanded even further with around 20 new traders and 70 stalls, as well as an ice rink, ice bar and live music.

They have something for everyone: artisan cheeses, plants, homemade chutneys, mead, jewellery, scents, fashion, retro style, eco-art, lego art, continental food, local homemade stew and home accessories. Phew. It’s not going to be difficult building your naughty and nice list!

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay

Where: Throughout the city centre

When: 16th Nov – 4th Jan

How much: Free entry

Edinburgh’s Christmas is a show-stopping, six-week season of festive entertainment in the heart of the gorgeous city.

Amongst all the magic and sparkle, you’ll find Santa Land in Princes Street Gardens, a festive fairground with six fun rides and a children’s market full of gifts and toys. You can also enjoy panoramic views of the capital from the top of the big wheel, a spin around on the charming carousel in East Princes Street Gardens, looping the Melville Monument on the oval ice rink, or braving a twirl on the 60-metre-high Star Flyer.

This UK Christmas market is a real magical experience, with many people choosing to wander the stalls after dusk, where the twinkling lights look even more beautiful.

Cardiff Christmas Market

Where: St Johns Street, Cardiff

When: 13th Nov – 23rd Dec

How much: Free entry

Cardiff Christmas Market returns to the pedestrian streets of Cardiff City Centre this year with a host of exciting and eclectic treats: adorable chalets you can browse to find the perfect quaint gift or get tipsy on the mulled wine, plus an alpine ice-skating trail, the first of its kind in the whole of the UK. Maybe try it before you have the mulled wine.

The trail is an open-air ice-skating experience, running 250m, making it amongst one of the longest ice trails in Europe. We can’t guarantee you won’t fall over and make a fool of yourselves, but we can guarantee you’ll enjoy every minute!

Holkham Festive Food Fair

Where: Holkham Hall, Norfolk

Let’s face it, food at Christmas is second to none. And Holkham Hall in Norfolk has had the genius idea to celebrate festive food so we can all gorge ourselves in the interests of research!

Go along to their unique UK Christmas market and feast your eyes on live cooking demonstrations with local chefs demonstrating new and exciting ways to really make your Christmas dinner pop this year! Hosted by Charlie Hodson of Charlie’s Norfolk Food Heroes.

There’s also the best local and regional producers showcasing their seasonal food and drink for you to try, and buy. From homemade jams, chutneys and cheeses, to Norfolk gins, wine and beers. It’s a great opportunity to stock up on ingredients for your own Christmas feast, whilst ticking off your gift list for the food lovers in your family.
